The
Story of the Record
"Demanding To Be Next" was recorded at famed Manhattan
studio RPM. It was produced by Preacher Boy with Amy Marinelli,
and engineered by Andy Sarroff for Woodshop Productions.
The album was recorded entirely live, and entirely solo
acoustic. Behind a wall of microphones that made Preacher Boy
look like he was giving a press conference, he sat with either his
National or one of his Martins, and played and sang his heart out.
And the wine even seemed to help.
The songs were culled from an initial list of over 300 selections.
And even mach III of the whittling-down process still left a list
of over 40 tunes. Finally, Preacher Boy went in to the studio with
22 songs, 16 of which were actually recorded, with 13 making the
final cut. The songs span a wide timeline, from Comin' Up Aces,
which was quite literally the first song written after Preacher
Boy returned to Ireland from the sessions for "The Devil's
Buttermilk," to A Little Better When It Rains, written
in Brooklyn only a month before the sessions began.
Interestingly enough, the album was not initially envisioned as
a solo acoustic project. The first plan was to do a version of The
Basement Tapes, bringing together a gang of musicians, setting them
all up in the same room, turning on the microphones, and seeing
what would happen. And although this idea was shelved for the time
being, it's still in the works, and will hopefully be the model
for a future album.
The decision to do a solo acoustic record was decided upon for many
reasons, partly because that's how Preacher Boy usually tours, partly
because it seemed like the best showcase for the particular tunes
he wanted to record, partly because he'd never done it before, and
mainly, because fans have been asking him to do it for years.
